Introducing Valio's 'eila' sub-brand to China with competitive positioning, a localized name, and a full visual identity system from logo to packaging.

The brand

Valio stands out as one of Finland’s most prestigious companies. As the nation’s leading milk processor, Valio has a remarkable portfolio that includes cheese, powdered ingredients, butter, yogurt, and milk, capturing 85% of Finland’s milk production. That legacy of quality and innovation set the stage for Valio’s leap into new markets.

The challenge

Valio’s objective was to help lead a transformation in China’s dairy market by moving from B2B to B2C. The mission was to infuse Valio’s heritage and product quality into a new sub-brand, “eila,” built specifically for Chinese consumers and able to hold its own in the premium dairy category.

We played a critical role in introducing eila in China. The work covered brand analysis, strategic positioning, and the crafting of eila’s visual identity, with a constant eye on market relevance and real consumer connection.

Our approach

Our first step was competitive environment research and a close look at Valio’s market positioning. We identified eila’s optimal space on the map, avoiding territories that felt “too mainstream” or “too extreme,” and finding a balance that spoke to both extroverted and introverted consumer qualities. The position reflected Valio’s heritage while answering the distinctive attributes that Chinese consumers look for in a premium dairy brand.

With that foundation set, we moved into localization and naming, landing on a resonant, recognizable Chinese name for eila. We then developed a complete visual identity system, including a CN logo, and extended it into packaging and a wide set of applications so the brand could arrive in market fully dressed.

Results

The streamlined approach elevated Valio and eila within China’s dairy market. By integrating global brand integrity with local market sensibilities, we secured Valio’s confident market entry and set up the brand for lasting presence. The outcome is a Finnish heritage story that reads as genuinely premium to Chinese consumers, without losing any of what made Valio Valio.
